AIP launches debate on opportunities and challenges of the energy transition
“The aim is for the electrical system to be
competitive, clean, safe and resilient, and companies want to consume cheap,
low-carbon energy that is not a factor in losing competitiveness with
competitors from other countries”. This was the starting point, launched by
José Eduardo Carvalho, president of AIP, for the debate that took place at AIP
on May 28, at the seminar "Energy of the Future: Sustainable Transition
with Renewables and Nuclear". With the aim of discussing and analyzing the
opportunities and challenges of the energy transition, the event featured, on
the side of the defenders of renewables, interventions by Pedro Amaral Jorge,
president of APREN, Jorge Vasconcelos, president of NEWES, and António Vidigal,
former president of EDP Inovação. Paulo Domingues dos Santos, general director
and CEO of ANAV and president of the Spanish Nuclear Society, Bruno Soares
Gonçalves, president of the Institute of Plasmas and Nuclear Fusion at IST, and
Pedro de Sampaio Nunes, former Secretary of State for Science and Innovation,
presented arguments on the contributions that nuclear energy can make. The
debate was moderated by journalist Bárbara Silva, from Jornal de Negócios.
